And this “longer reach” capability not only applies just to combat such as military missiles and guidance systems, but also in sports- a boxer’s longer reach; a quarterback’s 70 yard pass; an Olympic runner’s longer stride and so on, all continue to demonstrate the power of the longer reach! Even young David’s conquest of the giant Goliath was a product of David’s longer “reach” by means of a sling & rock outside the reach of Goliath’s spear! Human warfare has always been about the length of one’s “reach!”
So it is in the life of a Christ-follower; it is a Biblical-given that the person who is in Christ is going to face some sort of combat (literally and/or figurative) in their life. There are so many seen and unseen threats that hinder the maturation process of the Christ-follower- sometimes even those that are the result of the Christ-Follower’s own thoughts and conduct! Nevertheless, that which has the longest reach will have the greatest opportunity for victory.
For the Christ-follower, their weapon with the longest reach is prayer; prayer in the Spirit of Christ driven by the Spirit of Christ (Ephesians 6:18, Jude 19-21, Romans 8:26). For those in Christ, the weapon of far-reaching prayer not only out-reaches the weapons of the enemies of life, but also circumvents, penetrates and dismisses all the other “missiles” launched by their enemies. (Eph 6:16) The prayers of the saints go directly to the Father through Jesus who, sitting at the right hand of God, is far above all of creation; this is the longest reach that exists in the weaponry of the Christ-follower.
The Apostle Paul makes clear how to implement this type of prayer as a way of life in 1st Thessalonians 15:16-18:
“Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Yes, in so many ways, life has its times of war and combat; life has weapons, yet compared to Spirit-driven prayer, life’s weapons are just short range.
